In short a HybridCheckout counter is a combination of a conventional cashier operated counter (CCO) and a simplified self-checkout station (SCO), where the cashier and the customer are simultaneously scanning and registering items into combined or separate sales. The scanning and purchase completion steps takes place using a checkout counter that looks pretty much like any traditional checkout counter.

The HybridCheckout counter differs from a traditional counter, primarily because of the extra scanning area that has been added to support the customer scanning operation in an efficient way. Also, a customer touch monitor is added to support the customer with information and the option to manually add purchased items using a touch screen.

Sample layouts of the HybridCheckout counter are shown in the following figures:

This figure shows the cashier on the far side and the customer on the near side of the checkout counter. A split registration area is shown between the cashier and the customer, allowing both the cashier and customer to scan and register items to complete the sale.

The packing area shown is a turntable model.

This figure shows a conventional packing area layout, where one or more barriers are separating the packing sections as commonly seen in European stores.

This layout is the allround layout, suitable for most applications and basket sizes.

This figure shows a turntable packing area layout, where a rotating disc with freely moving barriers or bagging frames (USA style) are separating the packing sections.

This layout is suitable for scan-to-bag usage and checkout patterns where a majority of the sales have a low number of articles.

Traditional checkout and HybridCheckout process stages:

Current Checkout Counter: A "bottleneck" design perfected?

Stage 1, HybridCheckout: 2 x Scanning speed. Allows a 50% faster total line throughput.

Stage 2, HybridCheckout: 2 x Scanning speed and (next) customer scanning while cashier is taking payments. May also be combined with self-payment. Allows a 90% faster total line throughput.

Stage 3, HybridCheckout: 2 x Scanning speed and customer scanning while cashier is taking multiple payments. May also be combined with self-payment. Allows a 100+ % faster total line throughput.
